A Poem by Jo-Ann Allan-Forbes

Lessons in Drowning

Cold fish
beneath sparrow wings,
he could have been caught
in talons and teeth; instead it was
small fledgling with dark beaded eyes
who went blind at the juncture
of early signs--missed the warning
that fish can't fly; traded her wings
for a ring, and lessons in drowning.
